Lemon Law Refund Calculator

Estimate your lemon law refund, also called a buyback or repurchase, under your state’s lemon law. Enter your vehicle’s price and mileage to see an estimated buyback, with the mileage offset and any civil penalty broken out. This is a free estimate, not legal advice.

What you’ll need

The estimate takes about a minute. Have these three numbers handy:

  • What you paid for the vehicle — the purchase price, or the total of your lease payments and any amount due at signing.
  • The odometer reading at your first repair visit for the defect, from your repair order. Depending on your state, the calculator asks for this reading, the current reading, or both.
  • Your current odometer reading, from the dashboard. Depending on your state, the calculator asks for it, the first-repair reading, or both.

How the estimate works

A buyback estimate starts from what you paid for the vehicle, then subtracts an allowance for the use you got out of it before the problem appeared. That use allowance is the single biggest variable between states: some prorate it against a fixed mileage figure, some cap it as a percentage of the price, some charge a flat rate per mile, and at least one subtracts nothing at all.

Because the formula is state-specific, the calculator asks for your state first and then applies that state’s method, along with which charges (sales tax, registration, finance charges, options) that state treats as part of the refund. The result is shown as a low, expected and high range rather than a single number, since the exact figure depends on your records and on how the manufacturer responds.

This is an estimate to help you understand what is at stake before you talk to anyone. It is not legal advice, and it is not a promise of what you will recover.

Lemon law calculators by state

Each state writes its own refund formula, so pick yours for an estimate that uses the right numbers. Every state page includes the calculator plus a plain-English guide to that state’s requirements.
